Ice in pants man lured dating app victim to unit

A DRUG abuser and his former girlfriend lured a victim they found on a dating app to a unit and demanded $200.

Nathan Gerard Ward, 30, worked as a concreter in Mackay before drugs disrupted his life, Brisbane Supreme Court heard on Monday.

Ward was charged with fraud in relation to a May 2016 incident, when he and a former girlfriend "effectively lured” somebody to a unit and demanded money, Justice Helen Bowskill said.

He had been in court for drugs before and other drug charges were dealt with in Mackay last October.

At that sentencing, the court heard Ward pulled a bag out of his pants with 11.5g of the drug ice when police pulled him over.

He was sentenced on the fraud charge and four new drug charges this week.

The court heard Ward had now been drug-free for some time.

He also had family support, and a job to return to when he was released.

On August 31 last year, he was seen "effectively filtering a substance into a coffee mug”, Justice Bowskill said.

"You were recrystallising methylamphetamine using the solvent ethanol.”

Ward was found with 20.845g of pure methylamphetamine and faced up to 25 years in jail, Justice Bowskill said.

That maximum sentence was "indicative of how destructive and dangerous that drug is,” the judge said.

But the court heard Ward was also a victim of drug abuse.

"You have now experienced that first-hand [with] the destruction it's brought to bear on your own life,” Justice Bowskill added.

After the Mackay sentencing, Ward would have been eligible for parole in January.

But the five newer charges pushed his eligibility date back by 10 months.

He had been in custody since October 10 last year, and also served time in custody before his Mackay sentencing.

Ward pleaded guilty to the five new charges and earned credit for those pleas.

He will be eligible for parole in mid-November.
