Ice-fuelled attack on women ends in seven year jail term

A TOOWOOMBA man who stabbed a woman in the face and kicked another in the head during an ice-fuelled fit of rage has been jailed for seven years.

Casey Desmond George Lander, 29, had the initial charge of attempted murder against him dropped before he pleaded guilty in Toowoomba Supreme Court to committing a malicious act and assault occasioning bodily harm.

His barrister Frank Martin told the court his client claimed he had no recollection of the event which he put down to drug-fuelled violence.

Crown prosecutor Elizabeth Kelso said Lander turned up at the Wilsonton home of the complainants on the night of July 9, last year, and went into a bedroom where he took "ice".

He came out and back-handed a man, who then left, before arguing with a woman.

After grabbing a small knife from the table, he pushed the woman onto a couch and struck her four times in the face causing four puncture wounds.

When the woman's 19-year-old son came to her aid, Lander had punched him before kicking another woman to the head which left the imprint of his shoe on her forehead, Ms Kelso said.

Lander had then fled in the woman's car before police arrived but was found later that night at his mother's home and he had been held in custody since.

Mr Martin told the court his client was basically "institutionalised" after years of being in and out of jail. While in jail his client did all the courses available to better himself but when he got out of jail he returned to drug use and bad habits, he said.

Justice James Douglas declared 14 months spent in pre-sentence custody as time served under the sentence and ordered Lander be eligible to apply for release on parole as of September 10, 2019.
