I (still) do, 50 years on

AS CHILDREN we read fairytales and stories of the young princess, longing to meet her prince or knight in shinning armour.

To whisk her away, get married, live in a giant castle and to live happily ever after.

In reality more couples are choosing to make their own partnership and commitment special in different ways.

Australian statistics suggest one in three marriages will end in divorce, and as few as 5% will celebrate 50 years.

Last Friday, Childers celebrated the joyous occasion of the renewal of vow ceremony between Rod and Lyn Collins.

Celebrating 50 years of marriage, the happy couple brought family and friends together to witness their special day.

Pastor Bill Cowan conducted the ceremony at the Childers Wesleyan Methodist Church on Cevn St.

"I married the couple in Nambour 50 years ago, when they were both only 19," Pastor Cowan said.

Pastor Cowan felt honoured to be asked by the couple to conduct the service in Childers.

The blushing bride, Lyn Collins, said she remembered the morning of her wedding day, 50 years ago, sitting getting her hair done.

"It was emotional sitting in the chair 50 years later, thinking back to then," she said.

Today, Rod and Lyn Collins are great- grandparents and enjoy the community of Childers.

The Collins's dearest friends Pastor Bob Steinbrecher and his wife Chris joined them in celebrating the special milestone by being part of the ceremony.

The beautiful service brought tears to the eyes of the happy couple as they reflected over 50 years together.

"We have had many challenges and we still support and love each other," Mr Collins said.

The couple are active in their church community and say their answer to having a long lasting marriage is Jesus.
