How a young mother's dream turned into decades of success

SHE is about to celebrate 34 years in business but Classic Dimensions owner Robyn Fraser still remembers how tough it was when she first started up.

A young mother-of-three with a dream of being her own boss, Mrs Fraser embarked on what would be some of the hardest years of her life when she opened a dress shop on Palmerin St.

Now she is known as one of the most well-established retailers in Warwick.

With decades of experience under her belt, Mrs Fraser said finding a gap in the market and being prepared to do the hard yards was crucial.

"It does take 2-3 years to get your name out there," she said.

Andrew Cooper is just coming to the end of that start-up slog after taking over Coopers Menswear in October 2017.

He said finding a gap in the market was important in country towns.

"You have to get the right product," he said. "I don't think it is a good thing in a country town to have four of the same thing, it just makes life hard."

Both were surprised at the number of business closures in the region but agree the economic conditions of drought had been hard, even on the established businesses in town.

"I hope we don't see any more close but it is a concern," Mr Cooper said.

Chamber of Commerce president Julia Keogh said there were other reasons businesses come and go like retirement, family reasons and other business opportunities.
