THE Geneva International Motor Show is a giant of a spectacle, and for 2017 old-school performance cars have outshone the electrics and hybrids.

With over 100 new cars on display for the first time there's a huge amount to take in, but judging by the wall of bodies migrating to each supercar stand in time for the next reveal, the people still have an insatiable desire for performance.

Lamborghini showed off its Nurburgring lap record holder Huracan Performante, Ferrari's most powerful ever road car, the 812 Superfast, broke cover, as did the McLaren 720S, Aston Martin Valkyrie, Porsche GT3 991.2, Ford GT and Pagani Huayra Roadster.

Slightly more attainable performance machines also wowed, including the gorgeous new Alpine A110, Audi RS3 Sportback and RS5, Honda Civic Type R, Kia's grand touring Stinger delight and the new little Ford Fiesta ST hot hatch.

Some key big-selling models also took the stage for the first time. Mazda's top-selling mid-size SUV CX-5 has been sharpened up, as has the Nissan Qashqai, Jeep Compass, Volvo XC60 and Subaru XV.

Mitsubishi's new mid-size SUV Eclipse Cross will challenge the likes of CX-5 and Qashqai, while for something larger Skoda's new seven-seat Kodiak looks set to boost the Czech marque's appeal even further. Range Rover's striking Velar also looks set to be a winner, while the Alfa Romeo Stelvio SUV should do the brand no harm at all.

Fresh passenger vehicles include the cutesy Kia Picanto, facelifted Suzuki Swift, Hyundai i30 wagon and BMW's 5 Series wagon.

Name badges arriving for the first time include Fiat's Fullback Cross - an attractive double cab ute - and Volkswagen's Arteon which is a new coupe-styled four-door sedan.

Key for our market was seeing the sleek Opel Insignia - which will be the new Holden Commodore next year - and it was displayed in Sports Tourer wagon guise for the first time.

It wouldn't be a motor show without some jaw-dropping concepts, and standouts include a Porsche Panamera-rivalling Mercedes-AMG GT Concept, electric Jaguar I-Pace SUV, tough-as-nails Infiniti Q60 Project Black S, Citroen C-Aircross Concept (a funky kind of off-road Picasso) and Audi's mighty (and expensive-looking ) Q8 SUV.
