Hospital staff are keen to donate most blood in challenge
DARLING Downs Hospital and Health Service staff are rolling up their sleeves to help make sure the Australian Red Cross Blood Service supply never runs dry.
The DDHHS has registered to be part of the 2017 Red25 Health Services Blood Challenge, uniting to give blood until June 30.
Last year people from hospitals and other health organisations across Australia made a total of 3287 blood donations in the inaugural challenge.
Over the next few weeks, DDHHS staff will make sure their blood donation is added to the tally.
On Thursday, Toowoomba Hospital acting executive director Shirley-Anne Gardiner donated blood for the first time.
"It's a nice thought that a hospital can be featuring as a top donor because it's us that benefits when treating patients," she said.
"I'm also a very competitive person."
So far there have been 37 donations from staff. However, with 2000 staff Ms Gardiner is positive more will sign up.
Toowoomba Hospital transfusion nurse Susan Kay said donated blood was surprisingly versatile.
