Hooray for Hupmobiles

BUNDABERG was taken back to the early 1900s when about 22 vintage cars came to the city for the 16th Hupmobile Tour at the weekend.

Rally co-ordinator Ian Pearson said the cars - which were built in the US between 1908 and 1940 - had more than impressed the public.

"They're a popular collector's item, but they have become fairly rare," he said.

Mr Pearson, who owns a 1929 Hupmobile sedan, said the farthest one of the cars had come was from Tasmania. It was towed to the rum city especially for the rally.

"The car driven the farthest was a 1926 Hupmobile and it was driven from Melbourne to Bundaberg," he said.

The cars were on public display at the Botanic Gardens yesterday and will be in Childers today.
