Hong Kong backpacker faces court over fatal crash

A HONG Kong national has been charged with causing the horror crash at Pine Creek that killed two Hervey Bay fathers.

Pui Shan Rachel Wong, 30, was arrested on Monday and charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death following the double fatality on Thursday morning.

It will be alleged Wong crossed double lines on a hill and attempted to overtake some trucks when she smashed head-on with the northbound car carrying the Point Vernon concreters.

It is also alleged the two Brisbane-based women were running late to their jobs working on a farm in Childers.

Mark Smith, 51, and Steven Maher, 41 were on their way to work on a project at the Mater Hospital - they would never arrive.

Wong and her 28-year-old passenger were taken to Bundaberg Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

A clearly overwhelmed Wong appeared briefly in the Bundaberg Magistrates Court on Monday afternoon.

She slowly entered the courtroom on crutches, wearing shorts and a prison-issue jumper.

Magistrate Deb Vasta told the backpacker she had been charged with dangerously operating a vehicle that caused the death of the two men.

Wong did not speak during the short proceedings, but coughed quietly and clutched her obviously injured chest before the matter began.

The court was told a lawyer had been organised for Wong through the embassy but they would not arrive in Bundaberg until today.

Mrs Vasta remanded the woman in custody, to reappear at 3pm today.

The 2014 road toll for the Bundaberg region now stands at 12 crashes with 15 dead.
