Hollywood hunk home for Xmas

IT’S not often a smalltown girl meets a Hollywood star in the making.

But this week I met former Rockhampton lad Alex Russell, who already has heads turning in Hollywood.

The 22-year-old arrived home this week to spend the Christmas break with his family after a whirlwind year making his first feature film and being cast in an upcoming Hollywood production.

Alex, who has recently been reported in national media as being on a “Heath Ledger-like journey to becoming Australia’s next big name”, said it wasn’t always smooth sailing.

At school he was known as “the porker” and would dream of one day having muscles like his heroes Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jean Claude van Damme.

During primary school, the big thing Alex had going for him was his creativity and imagination.

He followed his passion and went on to study at famous Sydney drama school NIDA, from which he graduated last year.

The last three months Alex has spent in Hollywood and he’s already making progress in his career.

He will star in the Aussie flick Wasted on the Young when it’s released early next year; next month he starts filming for his US debut Touchback; and later in 2010 he will prepare for an Australian thriller, Talk Fast.

Amazingly, Alex stays grounded.

Despite having lived in Sydney and worked in Hollywood, Alex still calls Rocky home.

And he said his “family of champions” had been by his side every step of the way.

“My family are my favourite people in the world and I would like to become successful so I could take care of them,” Alex said.

In his lead role in Wasted on the Young, Alex plays a private school boy who is a champion swimmer, loved by everyone and gets what he wants, but it goes wrong.

Alex is waiting on his visa application so he can start filming in LA after Christmas.
