Coast holidaymakers watch late-afternoon drama

A SUNSHINE Coast kiteboarder, whose lines apparently became tangled, caused some late-afternoon drama at the Maroochy River mouth yesterday.

Onlookers raised the alarm about 5.20pm when the male, believed to be aged about 30, lost control of his kite and board.

Surf Life Saving Queensland regional manager Aaron Purchase said the incident had occurred just after the flags had been taken down on the first day of the 2015-16 surf patrol season.

He said the Queensland Ambulance Service and Water Police had asked SLSQ to assist in the rescue about 5.20pm and the after-hours emergency response system had been activiated.

Mr Purchase said a member of the public on a paddleboard had been assisting the kiteboarder until members of the Maroochydore Surf Club were able to bring him into shore in an inflatable rescue boat.

A large crowd of afternoon beach-goers and holidaymakers from the nearby Cotton Tree Caravan Park gathered by the foreshore to watch the events unfold.

Mr Purchase believed the notoriously strong outgoing tide in the river-mouth area, coupled with winds that picked up late in the afternoon to about 20-knot south-easterlies, could have made conditions tricky on the water.

The paddleboarder, Grant Lundgren, received a round of applause from the crowd when he returned to shore for his quick actions.
