Holiday nightmare: Couple in earthquake disaster zone

MAROOCHYDORE woman Cathy Norman is lucky to be alive after a night of terror on the Indonesian island of Lombok, east of Bali.

She was spending the last night of her stay at the Sheraton Senggigi, when a huge earthquake struck causing widespread damage to the nearby capital of Mataram, and killing more than 80 people.

Ms Norman, a former Queensland Miss Surf Girl, said she and her companion Paul Bergin had to run barefoot 100m up a hill in bushland in the dark with 1000 other people because of fears a tsunami was about to strike in the quake aftermath.

She said it took more than two hours to return back downhill after the tsunami warning was lifted only to find the resort a "complete mess".

"We were camped at the Sheraton entrance since then with seven aftershocks that just freaked me out," Ms Norman said.

"We have just got our gear out at 3am and waited for a driver to get us to the airport and get the hell out.

"I have never been so frightened in my life. It was a seven (rating). Glad we were booked out on a flight today."

She successfully made it to the Lombok International Airport near Mataram at 4.30am to find her original 10.30am booking had been moved forward to 6am without notice.

The death toll has climbed to 82 with hundreds of others injured after the earthquake struck late Sunday evening and was followed by a series of aftershocks registering to 5.4.

There has been widespread damage both on Lombok and also on nearby Bali on the other side of the Lombok Strait.

Federal Home Affairs Minister, Peter Dutton, was in Mataram for a regional security meeting when the earthquake struck but escaped uninjured.
