Hikers winched to safety off Fraser Island
BUNDABERG'S RACQ CareFlight Rescue has responded to an activated emergency beacon on Fraser Island at 11.45am yesterday.
The rescue helicopter flew to the beacon coordinates and found two men situated 10km north of Lake Wabby.
The two men aged 25 and 26 were experienced hikers and had laid out a reflective blanket so the helicopter could spot them in the dense canopy of trees.
The emergency beacon was activated after one hiker had fallen ill and whose condition had worsened overnight.
An aircrewman and paramedic were winched down to the hikers then extracted the sick man and transported him to Hervey Bay hospital for treatment.
The rescue helicopter then refuelled and returned to winch the second man and return him to the mainland with his companion.
RACQ CareFlight Rescue Air crewmen and pilots praised the two men for their excellent hiking skills and smart thinking.
