‘Highway Man’ passing through Darling Downs

GRANT "John'' Cadoret, also known as the "Highway Man'', worked in a bank in Melbourne until 1977.

One day that year the 22-year-old decided to leave for a six-month backpacking holiday around Australia.

He started walking and he's never stopped.

Yesterday he was on his way to Clifton.

Melanie Richmond has been following his story since she first heard about him on Australian Story.

She lets people know when he's heading through their town so they can help him on his way.

"People can help him by keeping an eye out for him or by offering him a meal or a cold or hot drink," she said.

"A few gold coins would be nice in case he wants to buy anything from the shops, or just see if he needs any supplies like batteries for his radio, paper or stamps or envelopes so he can post letters to his family members."

Ms Richmond's great uncle was a swagman and she loved hearing stories about him.

Now she looks after Mr Cadoret.

"I call myself John's guardian angel ... I keep him safe and let his family know he's okay," she said.

Ms Richmond said she understood Mr Cadoret simply liked life on the road.

"He walks because he enjoys the freedom and doesn't like what society expects you to be," she said.

"He's doesn't have to deal with the stress of the everyday life.

"He once told someone that he has a bucket list and is walking to all the towns he has not been to yet."

Ms Richmond said Mr Cadoret didn't receive payments from the government and survived on what he found along the highways.

She started the Facebook page "Grant John the highway man day by day journey" to support him and since then he's been getting regular meals and water.
