Hess told to aim for Queensland selection
LEAGUE: Queensland coach Kevin Walters has given a glowing endorsement to Bundaberg's Coen Hess.
Praising the North Queensland Cowboys forward for his transition into the NRL this season the Maroons coach has now set Hess a challenge for next year.
Recently selected for the Maroons emerging squad Walters wants the 20-year-old to push for Origin selection in the future.
"Over the next few years there'll be a few forwards transitioning out of the Origin arena, and those spots have to be taken by someone,” Walters said to the Townsville Bulletin.
"It's up to the player really when they get through to the next level, it's how hard they work and how they apply themselves.”
And Walters is impressed with how the Bundaberg-born player is going.
"He finished off the year really well for the Cowboys, it's nice to see another one come through the ranks,” Walters said.
"He's very skilful and he handled the step up in class and took his opportunity really well.”
"That's always a good sign for a young fellow, I thought that was the most impressive thing from him.”
Currently training for next season Hess said every target had been hit so far to improve again.
"I think I'm two kilos heavier at the moment than when I started, I like to think I'm putting on muscle and meeting my fitness targets,'' Hess said.
"It (making Emerging squad) gives me a lot of confidence, even to be suggested to be in that prestigious group is a big step forward in my development.
"Obviously there's some guys there who have a lot more NRL experience than me, so I'll take a lot learning from them.”
Hess and fellow Bundaberg player Felise Kaufusi will head into the emerging camp next month.
