Hess in frame for Origin debut
LEAGUE: North Queensland Cowboys captain Johnathan Thurston has thrown his full support behind Bundaberg's Coen Hess getting an Origin call-up later today for Queensland.
The Bundy product and Cowboy second-rower, in front of Queensland Maroons coach Kevin Walters, put in another match-winning display against Parramatta in his team's 32-6 win in Darwin.
Hess scored a try and gained 150m in 16 runs during a 46-minute appearance from the bench.
The try was set up b a returning Thurston, who took the spot of fellow Bundaberg player Kyle Laybutt at the last minute after recovering from a shoulder injury.
Laybutt will now have to wait again for his opportunity to make his NRL debut after missing again.
Thurston looks set to play for Queensland in game two of the Origin series with Hess likely to join him.
"I think he would handle it if he gets the opportunity,” Thurston told the Courier-Mail.
"I haven't spoken to Kevvie about him so we'll wait and see.”
If Hess is picked it would end Bundaberg's decade-long drought of having a player selected for Queensland with Antonio Kaufusi the last in 2007.
Hess will find out at 1pm if he is named.
