Hard work rewarded with great results for Bundy athletes
THE 2014 Hell Of The West triathlon lived up its name with brutal conditions greeting the athletes for the race in Goondiwindi.
Bundaberg's Angus McLean, Sherry Ey and Kephren Izzard braved the heat, wind and unusually high humidity to turn out great performances.
McLean finished the 2km swim, 80km bike ride and 20km run in 4:23.07, third in his age group (45-49 years men); Izzard was minutes behind in 4:25.41 (30-34 years men); Ey's time of 5:07.27 saw her ninth in the 40-44 years women.
It wasn't all good news from the event after a 21 year old Toowoomba man, Tom Lyons, died after finishing the race.
Mr Lyons collapsed after the race and despite the efforts of an on-site medical team was not able to be revived.
