Hampson beats the elements for title
CYCLING: Bundaberg's John Hampson is showing that age is no barrier to gaining state success.
The Coral Isle Cycling Club cyclist recently battled ferocious winds to claim a Masters state title on Stradbroke Island.
Competing in time trial in the 65 to 69-year-old category he won by 39 seconds in a time of just over 32 minutes.
"I thought more blokes would compete but that didn't happen because it was windy,” he said.
"You had to go hard but it was hillier than I thought.
"I did my best and I was happy with the win.”
Hampson's all-out attitude may have paid dividends in the end but he admits it was tough going at times.
"Going up the hills I did say 'I've had enough of this'”, he said.
"You get to the top though, go over, and you get your breath back so it was good.”
For the Bundaberg painter the pain is minimised by his love of the sport.
The sport is what makes him come back for more.
"I gave up smoking a few years and wanted to stay fit and lose a bit of weight,” he said.
"I think it's just a bug, you start riding the bike and it is an addiction.
"I love going away and competing, I've won a couple of Queensland titles and national titles so I just keep on going.”
Hampson will now look to add another state title when he competes at the Queensland Senior Championships on September 9 and 10.
