Guilty plea over 1983 Qld rape, murder case

Troy James O'Meara has this morning pleaded guilty to the 1983 rape and murder of 21-year-old Linda Reed almost three years after his shock arrest in a decades-long cold case breakthrough.

His plea brings to an end one of the state's oldest cold case murder mysteries, three years after he was arrested by police who are believed to have matched microscopic skin samples found on Ms Reed's body with his DNA.

Linda Reed was on her lunch break at Pacific Fair when she was abducted.

Ms Reed's decomposed body was found in bushland near Gaven shortly before Christmas more than 35 years ago.

Her hands had been tied behind her back with a bikini top and blue cord.

She was allegedly sexually assaulted after being abducted in her car on her lunch break from Pacific Fair Shopping Centre.

O'Meara, now 54, is believed to have been aged just 17 years old at the time he committed the murder.

The Courier-Mail can now reveal O'Meara was sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder of Vanessa O'Brien in 1985, two years after Ms Reed was killed.

O'Meara was sentenced to life in prison with hard labour. Hard labour was abolished as part of the sentencing regime in 1988 and meant his sentence then became a life sentence with eligibility for parole after serving 13 years.

Crown Prosecutor Jodie Wooldridge QC said O'Meara has been in custody since July 11, 1985.

During his time in prison he committed a number of offences including assaults on prison guards, an attempted escape and a successful escape in which he was on the run for part of one day.

His last offence was one of willful damage committed in 2014.

He will now be sentenced in the Brisbane Supreme Court by Justice Glenn Martin.
