Grasstree Gracie is set free after nursed back to health

GRACIE the large green turtle has been released back into the ocean, less than a month after being rescued at Grasstree Beach.

The turtle, which was estimated to be between 30 and 50 years old, was found lying on the shore and suffering from a severe case of Floater Syndrome.

The RSPCA and Mackay Turtle Watch were called and the turtle was taken to Airlie Beach at Whitsunday Turtle Rescue Centre to recover.

The community named her Gracie from Grasstree.

Floater Syndrome is most commonly caused by turtles mistaking plastic pollution for food.

The ingested plastic becomes stuck in the turtle's digestive tract and creates a build up of gas in their system causing them to float.
