Grannies fined $500 each after arrest at Shoalwater Bay

In court this morning, the three mature-aged women said their cause was for peace and justice, and to protest against military operations for exercise Talisman Sabre.

One of the women Josephine Vallentine, 69, said she and her fellow activists simply carried out a non-violent protest and asked military and police personnel to join them for morning tea.

They were arrested at the Byfield gates to the Shoalwater Bay military training precinct.

No convictions were recorded for the women.

THIS MORNING: Police have arrested three women in relation to an incident at the Australian Defence Force's (ADF) Shoalwater Bay Training Area yesterday afternoon.

Three women were arrested by Military Police and were handed over to local police when they repeatedly refused requests to leave the training area.

The three women aged 71, 69, 65 were transported to Rockhampton Police Station and charged with trespass offences under Commonwealth legislation.  They will appear in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court this morning.

In a separate incident, ADF Military Police arrested two persons who were located inside the training area near Samuel Hill.

A 41 year-old man and a 50-year-old woman were handed over to local police and transported to the Rockhampton Police Station.

They were also charged with trespass offences and will appear in the Rockhampton Magistrates Court this morning.
