Good Samaritan helps firie passed out on side of the road

WHILE rural firies are feeling the heat of the recent Keelty Review, local volunteers continue to place themselves in danger battling blazes.

Mt Maurice Rural Fire Brigade 3rd Officer Ashley Geddes found himself in a sticky situation last Saturday night, while fighting a fire near O'Connor and Leferink Rds, Benaraby.

Mr Geddes, a field testing officer for Robertsons Lifting Rigging and Height Safety in Gladstone, said he had passed out after suffering smoke inhalation while protecting homes from the fire.

"We were with two other brigades and they were on the other side of the fire so they couldn't see me or the other bloke I was with through the smoke," he said.

"I was blacking in and out and radioed to my guy that he needed to come help me out before I dropped the hose.

"I couldn't see much of where I was going but I wasn't in danger of getting too badly burnt."

Mr Geddes had been in between fences of homes, extinguishing trees that were catching alight in the gully, in order to keep nearby properties safe.

After he blacked out, the firie said a mystery woman had pulled up and checked to see if he was okay, before offering to take him to hospital.

Mr Geddes was grateful for the show of compassion, and after he was treated for smoke inhalation at Gladstone Hospital, set out to track her down on Facebook.

The mystery helper turned out to be local Rhiannon Gilson, who played down the kind act.

"I saw him passed out and just checked to see if he was alright," she said.

"He already had another firie with him by that stage."

Mr Geddes gave Ms Gilson his Rural Fire Fighting ID tags as a token of his appreciation for her kindness.
