TWO sportswomen at the top of their sports have keys to the city and its people's hearts.

Thousands turned out at Broadbeach parklands to welcome home US Open champion Samantha Stosur and world-champion hurdler Sally Pearson.

Both were presented with keys to the city from another sports legend, Ron Clarke.

"It (US Open final) was a big moment for me but obviously for my family and friends as well," Stosur said.

"I tried not to think about the people back home. I tried to keep my mind on what I was doing."

But Stosur appreciated the welcome she received when she returned home.

"I have never had a reception like this in my life," she said.

Pearson won the 100m hurdles at the 2011 IAAF World Championships in South Korea earlier this month in a time of 12.28sec.

"I don't realise how much support I get back home, because you are so focused, so narrow-minded," Pearson said.

"I really hope this inspires people.

"Even if it's just one little kid, it's worth it."
