Big Dog to lure Glenreagh tourists
COFFS Harbour has the Big Banana and Glenreagh is soon to get the Big Yellow Dog.
Glenreagh’s Golden Dog Hotel is soon to get a giant-sized version of its namesake.
Warren Dean, who took over Glenreagh’s Golden Dog Hotel four-and-a-half years ago, has commissioned a four-metre tall, six-metre-long dog statue to become a tourist attraction for travellers along the Orara Way.
A steel-framed armature will create the skeleton of the dog with its body built of wire netting which will be finished with a skin of cement render and painted.
The dog will be golden yellow rather than metallic gold.
The dog, modelled on the canine statue which has been a feature of the hotel’s beer garden, is already under construction off-site, but the project, which is being completed outdoors because of its size, has been delayed by wet weather.
The dog is being constructed by Korora-based builder Gary Smith.
Mr Dean said once the steel frame was on site it would only take a few weeks to complete, but he could not yet set a date on when the statue would be completed and put in place.
The project is a special one for Warren Dean, because he was one of the cement renderers who put the peel on the Big Banana, which was completed in 1964.
