Girl cadets have the right stuff

BUNDABERG girls are showing they’re made of tough stuff with three female air cadets promoted on Tuesday night.

Jessica Butcher and Janet Furnish were promoted to corporal while Brittany Francis gained her sergeant’s stripes.

“It is not really usual to have so many girls promoted but we have 10 girls so it is about a third of our unit,” Air Cadet commanding officer Ron Bishop said.

Two male cadets were also promoted.

Mr Bishop said the young women had been promoted because of their hard work and commitment to the unit.

The night also marked a milestone for Mr Bishop, who officially took command of the unit.

“I’m honoured to be in this situation and it is a great opportunity to teach leadership, discipline and excellence,” Mr Bishop said.

Mr Bishop, who was in the United States Air Force for about 20 years, said he became involved with the cadets after his son wanted to join.

Mr Bishop said through the cadets he had noticed the teenagers gain confidence and leadership skills and hoped he could help them continue to do the same.

“If I can keep just one person off the street and engaged with the community then I’ve done my job,” Mr Bishop said.
