GIN Gin Golf Club has lost one of its pioneers and very willing worker with the passing of Geoff Powell recently.

Geoff started playing golf at Bargara when he bought a beach house beside the course in the early 1960s.

He then joined the band of Gin Gin members who converted the old racecourse into a very interesting nine-hole course.

This included building a clubhouse to replace the marquee that was put up every Saturday and Sunday.

He was involved in converting the old sand greens into grass and all this work was rewarded with a life membership in 1985.

Bargara members will know Geoff through his friendship with long-time Bargara captain Vern Neller.

This friendship was the main reason that the two clubs started playing a home and away competition.

The two clubs play for the Powell/Neller Shield, which has created great fellowship between the two clubs for many years now.
