Gift of a pearl finds way to mum

TEN days before his death, AB Wilkie was thinking only of mum Karen Bailey.

The cook took some shipmates on a quest to find the perfect pearl as a gift for his mum — but he was never able to give her the gift.

Instead, his shipmates presented Mrs Bailey with the pearl when they met with her on Thursday.

The tearful mum clutched the jewellery box as she told the story at her son’s funeral yesterday.

“Soon after receiving the pearl, I went to visit my son for the last time,” she said.

“They were playing It’s Time to Say Goodbye, and I looked at him and I reflected that it was like a bride.

“Then I saw the white flag in the background and thought it really was like a marriage between our family and the Navy.”
