Garden named coach

RUGBY LEAGUE: Newly signed East Bundaberg Magpies player Josh Garden has been handed the responsibilities as coach of the team next season, club president Adam David announced yesterday.

The club said that veteran enforcer AJ Evans would become captain of the A-grade team.

“We thought that with Josh’s experience playing league in elite competitions and his enthusiasm, he was the right pick,” David said.

“AJ’s been at the club a long time and he’s a real leader for the team.”

The club announced earlier in the week that Garden was joining the team after returning from England, where he was playing in Bradford and Leeds.

The former Across the Waves and Wide Bay halfback will head the day-to-day coaching of the A-grade team, but David said an experienced coach from outside of the region would be brought in to oversee the coaching operation.

“He will take a director of coaching role, but I’m not in the position to announce who it is yet,” David said.

“I can say that he is an experienced, respected coach in Wide Bay rugby league.”

Easts are excited about the year ahead, with Garden joining a star-studded line-up that includes Matt Tanner, Evans, Andrew Mason and Shaun Swift.

The team is hoping to be regarded alongside competition powerhouse Brothers after getting knocked out of the semi-finals by eventual premiers Maryborough Wallaroos last season.
