Game of Thrones conquers Emmy Awards, sets new record

GAME of Thrones has taken out the top gong at today's Primetime Emmy Awards.

The popular fantasy drama series, currently filming its sixth season, was named Most Outstanding Drama Series at the 67th annual awards in Los Angeles.

The HBO show also set a new Emmys record for the most wins, 12, in a single year by a TV series previously held by  West Wing.

Author George RR Martin was in attendance alongside many of the show's stars including Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, Maisie Williams and Peter Dinklage, who took home the award for Most Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama.

Viola Davis also made history by becoming the first African American woman to be named Most Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama.

She used the opportunity to highlight the women battling racial and gender inequalities in the industry.

"You cannot win an Emmy for roles that are simply not there," she said.

"So here's to all the writers, the awesome people… who have redefined what it means to be beautiful, sexy, to be a leading women, to be black."

Mini-series Olive Kitteridge and comedy Veep were the other big winners of the night, winning six and four awards respectively.

Retired The Daily Show host Jon Stewart was also commended for his final season at the helm of the long-running satirical news show, which was named Most Outstanding Variety Talk Series. The show also took home the awards for Most Outstanding Writing and Directing of a Variety Series.

Jon Hamm also finally won his first Emmy for his starring role in the final season of the period drama Mad Men.

Actor Tracey Morgan also received a standing ovation for his first public appearance since recovering from a horrific car crash which left him in a coma for eight days.
