Residents dig deep for electrocuted family tragedy

A traumatised Tablelands community is digging deep to help the family of a mother and daughter killed in a freak farm electrocution accident on New Year's Eve.

It comes as family friends of Juanita Bendel, 39, and her 10-year-old daughter Ava Cole pay tribute to two beautiful souls taken too soon.

Former Member for Barron River Michael Trout grew up with Ms Bendel's husband and Ava's father, Mitchell, who discovered the tragedy when he came home for lunch.

"They are the most wonderful family," Mr Trout said.

"Mitch lives for his kids and his wife, they're a beautiful couple.

"It's just heart-wrenching."

Ravenshoe resident Nicola Baker has helped set up a bank account to allow community members to directly donate to help with funeral costs.

It had to be approved by the Department of Justice - a process that usually takes a fortnight but was fast-tracked to a matter of days.

"Speaking on behalf of the community, we understand this has been a very difficult and emotional time," Ms Baker said. "When an event like this occurs, the last thing people think of is money.

"This family needs to recover, and these funds are so they can do that with some sort of peace of mind."

Investigations into the incident are under way but it is believed the mother and daughter were picking vegetables when they touched a fence that had become electrified by a semi-trailer with its battery on charge.
