Fresh start for Bundy store

THE former Bundaberg Marketplace Fruits will get a fresh start next week, after a former supplier bought the site and plans to re-open it.

Early last month, the NewsMail reported the site could have been auctioned off, following Bundaberg Marketplace Fruits going into liquidation, but Peter and Glenis McPhee bought it two weeks ago and plan to relaunch as Bundy Fresh and Bundy Fresh Meats.

"There’ll be lots of weekly specials and lots of fresh local produce," Mr McPhee said.

"It’s a nice big shop with a good car park."

Store manager Glenn Pennington was busy preparing for the opening yesterday, and was not just enthusiastic about kick-starting the fresh business, but also pleased to say some past employees have been re-employed.

He said head butcher Gary Cowle was "stoked" to be back, and Bundy Fresh would stock more variety — not just fruit, veges and meats, but also bread, milk, eggs, and basics such as pasta and sauce.

"The whole area is a fresh fruit market," Mr Pennington said.

"My goal is to provide top-quality fruit and veges — it’s pretty much a one-stop shop."

Mr Pennington said up to 15 people in total would be employed at the butcher and in various roles at the fresh fruit market.

Mr Cowle said he was looking forward to returning to work, after finding himself unemployed following the closure last month of Bundy Marketplace Fruits.

"We’ll be giving personalised service and good, old-fashioned prices," he said.

Mr Cowle is also looking forward to using the slogan "Pleased to meet you with meat to please you," he said.

Originally from Brisbane, Mr Pennington said he spent between 2003 and 2006 travelling throughout England, and has been "looking for a place to call home" since deciding to settle in Bundaberg.

"I’m really looking forward to calling Bundy home for a long time," he said.

Mr McPhee was a major supplier for Bundy Marketplace Fruits, and said he would continue to supply the re-designed shop with fresh fruit and veges.

"I’m confident I can do a lot better," Mr McPhee said.
