Free range eggs not meeting code: Choice
CONSUMERS are paying double the cost of caged eggs for free range eggs, but many sold as "free range" do not meet expectations of the label.
A Choice consumer advocacy group report showed 213 million eggs sold last year as free range fell short of the national model code of practice.
It found that consumers paid as much as twice the cost of caged eggs to get free range eggs, but they may be misled about the conditions the chickens lived in.
Choice said many top brand "free range" eggs had stocking densities "at odds" with the code's model of 1500 birds a hectare.
The advocacy group has urged consumers to write to their consumer affairs minister to urge a national standard be adopted.
