Jellyfish stings man 25m in air

A FILIPINO fisherman suffered a severe irukandji sting after a wave carrying the jellyfish splashed in his face, despite being 25m above sea level on the weekend.

The 45-year-old was aboard the Singaporean registered bulk carrier Konmax, at Abbot Point, north of Bowen, on Sunday when the freak accident occurred.

The RACQ – CQ Rescue was tasked to the carrier with reports a crew member was suffering extreme pain and in a distressed, agitated state.

It was the third mission for the Rescue service that day and the second one to Abbot Point and described as a "fascinating task".

The Rescue helicopter landed on the ship at 6pm and the intensive care paramedic administered pain relief immediately in an effort to stabilise the patient.

A spokesperson said up until this point, communication had been a problem due to the language barrier between patient and rescue crews.

The Filipino patient was able to convey he had been fishing from the ship when he was splashed in the face with sea water.

Paramedic Brad Watson said he remembered a similar incidence in Broome, Western Australia where a fisherman was stung by a jellyfish when reeling in his line.

He said the symptoms of this patient were identical to those of an irukandji sting.

The Filipino man was treated immediately for the sting which stabilised the patient for transfer to Mackay Base Hospital.

There it was confirmed he had suffered an irukandji sting.

RACQ – CQ RESCUE air crewman Geoff Abrahams said this is one of the most “fascinating tasks I’ve worked on”.

“Realistically, what are the chances of being stung by a jellyfish when you are safely on board a bulk carrier 25 metres above the water? It’s really incredible.”

The CQ Rescue also retrieved a New South Welshman from Long Island on Saturday suffering the affects of a jellyfish sting.
