Fraser wants same-sex civil unions

SAME-SEX civil unions could soon be recognised in Queensland if the acting Premier, Andrew Fraser, gets his wish.

Mr Fraser said he was prepared to move a private member's bill before Christmas for the state to recognise same-sex unions and he has called on Parliament to support the proposal.

He said civil partnerships were as far as state government could go in acknowledging the relationship rights of gay and lesbian couples.

''My views are on the record and if necessary I am prepared to move a private member's bill,'' Mr Fraser said. ''My assessment is there is very strong support across the ministry and across the backbench, and I hope the other side of the Parliament would vote with their conscience. The bill would be introduced before Christmas; whether it came to a vote was dependent upon Parliament.''

The Reverend Leigh Neighbour, who conducts holy unions for same-sex couples at the Metropolitan Community Church in Brisbane, said Mr Fraser's proposal was long overdue.
