Man sickened by fowl stench after buying Aldi chicken
WHEN Bundaberg man Pranaya Gurung grabbed some Aldi chicken wings and drumsticks out of his fridge to cook dinner for his family, he was met with a foul stench that made his stomach turn.
Upon opening the two Broad Oak Farms 2kg packages, Mr Gurung said it was obvious that the chicken was very off.
"It was incredibly smelly. The whole house had a stench through it," he said.
Mr Gurung and his wife had only purchased the chicken on September 21 at Aldi in Kepnock and had kept it refrigerated for a day before opening both packages to cook dinner.
"The use-by ate said it still had a few days to go, until September 24," he said.
"If my family had eaten it, we would have become very sick."
Mr Gurung said it was the third time this year he had experienced low quality food and health risks associated with the Broad Oak Farms brand from Aldi.
"We had the same problem twice before," he said.
"The first and second time Aldi apologised and gave us our money back and said they would investigate.
"We said we would never by that brand again but since it has been a few months, my wife forgot and bought the chicken while grocery shopping," he said.
"This is the third time it has happened. I am not surprised but I am disgusted.
"I understand Aldi offers cheaper prices on their items but that should not mean the quality of health and safety standards is lowered."
Mr Gurung made a written complaint to Aldi's head office via their web page and was expecting a reply within four working days.
An Aldi spokeswoman said the company was committed to providing customers with safe products.
"We have a stringent quality assurance and testing program in place to ensure we meet all statutory requirements regarding food safety," she said.
"Aldi is sorry to hear of this customer's experience and take any concerns with our products seriously, logging and monitoring all reports to ensure we track any potential trends."
The spokeswoman said Mr Gurung's incident was an isolated case with no issues or trends identified at a store level or across the supply network.
"However Aldi will continue to investigate the matter, working closely with our supplier," she said.
"We are committed to providing our customers with safe products of the highest quality and will always remove any product from sale if it is identified as a risk to our customers."
