Four police with tasers arrest 'armed' man in Gympie

A PEAK hour Bruce Hwy drama late this afternoon allegedly began with a man, a knife and a large suspected dose of amphetamine.

It ended a few minutes later with four police, two Tasers and a large dose of sedatives, according to information from police and witnesses.

A spokesman said a passing motorist called police about 4.08pm to report a man with a large knife behind Hungry Jack's.

Running from police, the man at first ran towards the netball courts and then ran across the busy highway, nearly getting "skittled" on the way, a witness said.

Police pursued him and tackled him at the Coles Shell service station, outside Beefy's Pies.

Workers in the area said they were no allowed to comment, but a service station customer said the man seemed to be drug affected.

"It took four police to hold him down. He was Tasered too, at least once.

"He was certainly acting like he was on drugs," he said.

Police said the man had been sedated and taken by ambulance to Gympie Hospital to have Taser probes removed.
