Former Sydney charity worker killed in Syria

A FORMER Sydney man has reportedly been killed in war-torn Syria while working for a German charity.

Shareef Alnimer, 27, was working for Helping in Need when he was killed about 10 days ago.

The charity's website says it helps distribute food and other supplies to Muslims in the war-torn country.

His family and friends confirmed his death on social media this week.

They said he was a man with the heart of a lion.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said in a statement on Thursday the government was aware of reports of Mr Alnimer's death but could not confirm it.

"The government's capacity to confirm reports of deaths in either Syria or Iraq is extremely limited," she said.
