Forensic crews comb crime scene in Pialba after assault

A UNIT in Pialba is at the centre of a police investigation after a 58-year-old resident was savagely attacked in the middle of the night.

The male victim, known by neighbours as Wayne, is currently in Brisbane in a serious condition while his attacker is on the run.

It is estimated the attack occurred between 12.50am on Saturday and 1.15am on Sunday, with the injured man going on to make a 000 call.

Neighbours in the Alice St complex, located across from a primary school, have been left on edge including a pregnant Kathryne Holloway who said she was terrified to leave the house.

She described Wayne as a pleasant neighbour who generally kept to himself.

"When I first moved in, he was really kind... he kept bringing me dog food over," Ms Holloway said.

"I don't know why this would happen to him, I feel really bad.

"Cops have blocked off my (driveway.)"

Ms Holloway said robberies were common in the low-cost housing area.

In the two years she's lived in the complex, she's been robbed three times.

Another nearby resident recalled hearing a sound like a scream in the early hours of Sunday.

Other neighbours told the Chronicle they were sleeping and didn't hear anything.

Detective Acting Inspector Wade Lee said the circumstances of the attack were unclear at this stage and extensive forensic investigations were taking place in order to piece the puzzle together.

He said it appeared the 58-year-old was beaten with a a weapon, possibly a bar.

"Police were called to the scene by the victim and upon arrival were given a version of events," Det Lee said.

"His injuries are of a serious nature."
