Experience the journey from sugar cane to sugar crystal

HAVE you ever wondered how the sugar you pour into your morning cup of tea gets there from the cane fields that surround the Isis region?

As part of this year's Childers Festival celebration, Bundaberg Regional Council, through its Childers Friends of the Festival group, has organised a tour that will reveal the amazing transformation from sugar cane to sugar crystal.

The council's community services spokeswoman Judy Peters said the tour, to be held in Childers on Friday evening July 24, would feature expert commentary and involve visits to all the key sites associated with sugar production.

"The tour will start with a visit to a sugar cane farm to witness mechanical harvesting then progress to the Isis Central Sugar Mill for a guided tour and finally to another farm to view the rare spectacle of a cane fire," she said.

"Over the years it had become increasingly difficult to be able to source this form of insight.

"We are extremely grateful to district farmers and the directors and management of Isis Central Sugar Mill for partnering with council to present this tour."

Cr Peters said the tour cost of $35 included bus collection from the Crescent St car park and a barbecue on return provided by the Rotary Club of Childers. Visit childersfestival.com.au.
