Fluffs crew in third
THE Bundaberg 'Fluffs' under-19 crew has finished third in the Overall Pointscore for the Australian Surf Rowers League (ASRL)-Queensland Surf Boat Navy Series after finishing fifth in the final round of the competition at Bribie Island last Saturday.
The boys went into the final round in third position and needed a good result to fall their way, as well as for the crews in front of them to perform below their best.
But this was not to be with the powerful Alexandra Headland PDF crew running away with the overall pointscore in the age division, despite finishing second on the weekend to Currumbin Titans.
Alexandra Headland won on 19 points, with Mooloolaba Ten 4 claiming second with 14 points and the Fluffs on 13.
The Bundaberg open women and open men's crews were unable to qualify for their respective finals on the weekend, but gained valuable experience through the qualifying rounds and will be primed for the start of the ASRL Queensland Cup Series that starts next month.
Bundaberg's Jeremy Rethamel and Elliott Heads' Braydon Batt have just returned from an intensive training camp on the Gold Coast as members of the 2011-12 Surf Life Saving Queensland High Performance Squad.
The youngsters were put through their paces as part of an intensive live-in camp, where they were exposed to coaching sessions, training tips and expert advice provided by leading athletes, coaches and health professionals.
Batt would no doubt have used the experience to prepare himself for his upcoming trip to Sydney next month where he will represent Queensland in the Australian Interstate Surf Life Saving Championships.
Hopefully he will also be joined by several other local surf life savers who are in contention to be drafted into the Northern Territory state team to compete at the same event.
