Five vehicle pile-up

BREAKING NEWS UPDATED: A FIVE-VEHICLE pile-up at a notorious accident spot saw one person airlifted to hospital and traffic blocked for nearly two hours in both directions.

A semi-trailer involved in the smash – which happened about 11.30am at the Isis River Bridge, about 16km south of Childers on the Bruce Highway – rolled over and burst into flames, spreading a fire into nearby bushland.

One female was airlifted to Bundaberg Hospital with serious injuries after she was freed from a vehicle by Childers firefighters using the jaws of life.

Although the blaze was under control as traffic started to move through the site about 1.40pm, it flared up again in the afternoon.

A water-bombing helicopter attended the scene just after 5.30pm to help extinguish the persistent blaze.
