UPDATE 6PM:  A crime scene has been declared at a Sarina home gutted by fire this afternoon.

Police will guard the property overnight before fire investigators arrive in the town south of Mackay tomorrow to determine the cause of the blaze.

The Sarina Beach Rd property was gutted in the upstairs interior when the fire took hold about 2.15pm.

While the point of ignition is yet to be definitively determined, it is believed the fire started in the lounge room in the centre of the home.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews have taken asbestos precautions because of the age of the house.

QFES Mackay station officer Scott Campbell said four appliances - two from Sarina and one each from Mackay and Walkerston - arrived on scene and reported the home was "well alight".

"From a fair distance away we could tell the structure was well alight by the amount of smoke coming from it so we went into action pretty quick to suppress that fire," he said.

Crews in breathing apparatus searched the house and attacked the fire from inside the property, confirming everyone had safely evacuated.

"Everybody was outside and there was no harm done to any persons or firefighters," Mr Campbell said.

"At this point in time it is a crime scene."

He confirmed the home had been fitted with working smoke alarms.

"From what we believe (the alarms) were inside the structure and it is probably a timely reminder that smoke alarms do give people early warning to evacuate from the premises," he said.

UPDATE 4PM: Police have closed a Sarina road as firefighters continue dampening down a house fire that broke out earlier today.

Sarina Beach Rd is closed on the outskirts of the town as investigations get under way into what sparked the blaze about 2.15pm.

The high-set timber home is substantially damaged and appears gutted in the upstairs interior with blackened ceilings and melted paint.

The front door at the top of the stairs has melted in the heat with the awnings charred.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus are inside the home attacking the fire and dampening hotspots.

A smoke alarm heard on the street more than 40 minutes after the fire broke out has since stopped as a large crowd of onlookers watch the emergency scene.

Queensland Ambulance paramedics assessed three people who escaped the fire as emergency services arrived - they were the only occupants of the home.

Paramedics remain on standby but all persons inside the home are accounted for.

EARLIER 2.45PM: FIREFIGHTERS are working to contain a well-involved fire at a Sarina home.
