School evacuated after fire breaks out in maintenance room

UPDATE 1.30pm: FIREFIGHTERS have extinguished a fire at a Sunshine Coast school, with about 400 students evacuated from the site.

Five fire crews rushed to the Immanuel Lutheran College at Buderim about 12.30pm, after a small fire was discovered in the ducting system in the school's maintenance room.

Immanuel Lutheran College Principal Colin Minke said all students and staff in the secondary school area were evacuated after the alarm was raised.

The fire was extinguished about 12.45pm, and staff and students have since returned to the buildings.

Mr Mike said the fire was not as serious as some students - who were hoping to have the day off - would have liked.

The fire is being treated as non-suspicious, and Mr Minke believed it started after residual paint in the ducting system overheated and caught fire.

Fire investigators will further examine the cause of the blaze.

Mr Minke said the school's evacuation procedures went perfectly to plan.

"They were out and accounted for in 10 minutes," he said.

He said it was the school's second fire incident in 34 years.
