Fiona Simpson steps down from Cabinet for family reasons

MEMBER for Maroochyore Fiona Simpson has resigned from the Shadow Cabinet so she has more time to care for her sick father.

The long-serving MP issued a statement saying she had informed Opposition Leader Tim Nicholls of her resignation, effective immediately.

But she said she would be continue to serve as the Member for Maroochydore.

"This decision to resign from the Shadow Cabinet has not been easy," Ms Simpson said.

"However I have made it so I can devote more time to caring for a seriously ill member of my family.

"As close friends and colleagues know, my dad Gordon is fighting cancer and I need to be closer to home rather than travelling through regional and remote parts of Queensland at this time.

"I would like to thank Tim for his understanding and the opportunity to serve Queenslanders and the LNP as Shadow Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Multicultural Affairs.

"I fully intend to contest the next state election and be part of a new, Tim Nicholls-led LNP Government - a government for all Queenslanders.

"In the meantime, I will continue to work hard to deliver the strongest possible representation for the families, businesses and communities of the Maroochydore electorate and the Sunshine Coast."

Mr Nicholls said Ms Simpson had made an invaluable contribution to the LNP - and would continue to do so.

"Of her many strengths, Fiona has long championed the importance of family and her unselfish decision today reflects that," Mr Nicholls said.

"She is the pinnacle when it comes to upholding the LNP's values of service and family."

Mr Nicholls announced Member for Chatsworth Steve Minnikin as the new Shadow Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships and Multicultural Affairs.

Member for Gympie Tony Perrett will replace Mr Minnikin as Deputy Opposition Whip.
