FFA Cup: Doon Villa beats United Warriors on penalties

A RED carded player and extra time - Doon Villa had been there before.

It was only three weeks ago, in Doon Villa's only other game this season, when the Maryborough club stunned United Park Eagles 3-2 to secure a third-round FFA Cup win in extra time.

In Thursday night's fourth-round game, it was United Warriors who had all the momentum when Magpie Joel Nielsen was red-carded midway through the second half.

The Hervey Bay club fell behind 2-0 early in the Villa Park match, but last year's Wide Bay League grand finalists clawed their back into the match.

Doon Villa led 2-1 at the break, and Nielsen's red card triggered a mini fightback from the Warriors, who led 3-2 as the minutes ticked away.

Somehow, Doon Villa found an equaliser to send the game into extra time.

A United goal in extra time's first period signalled what could have been the end but, again, Doon Villa found equaliser.

"I don't know, we just kept fighting," coach Lachlan Kenny said after full time.

Kenny, along with his teammates, was shattered as the extra time ended with the scores locked at four apiece.

The score suggests goalkeepers Adam Young (Doon Villa) and Fraser White (United Warriors) were off their game, but, to the contrary, they each saved a lot more than found the net.

Both men were pinged for being off their line in the penalty shootout, but it was Doon Villa who capitalised for the one penalty that proved the difference.

"Adam made some great saves throughout the game, he kept us in it," Kenny said.

"We did not expect it at all. We played better early on but they took it to us."

Doon Villa will now play Brothers Aston Villa on Saturday night at Bundaberg's Martens Oval.

It shapes as a tough assignment to play two games in three days, but if any club can do it it's Doon Villa.
