Fears people using clown purge as excuse to commit crime
A TOOWOOMBA woman fears residents are using the world-wide clown purge as an excuse to commit crimes.
Tam Haworth said people dressed as clowns vandalised her brother's car on Friday night near Alderley and Ramsay Sts in Centenary Heights.
"This clown stuff is out of control," she wrote on the Toowoomba Crime Watch and Alerts Facebook page.
"I thought it was funny at first until they took a hacksaw to my brother's car last night."
Ms Haworth will allege clowns pulled off the rubbers around the back of the car's windscreen, scratched the bonnet and sides of the vehicle and scraped all the window edges.
"It's not a joke when you're doing damage to people's property," she said.
"It is time someone stood up and said something."
Ms Haworth feared residents were taking the clown craze away from its original purpose to prank and scare people and were now causing damage and committing crimes.
"Yeah I'm not blaming the official group, I spoke to one of them not long ago and they said they weren't going to hurt anyone," she said.
"I just hope these guys are found and charged."
She said her brother saw the clowns running "up the street" from his car on Friday night but he did not want to confront them.
A Toowoomba Police spokeswoman said police had yet to receive a formal complaint.
