Fans left outraged after Williams likened to gorilla

TENNIS: Fans were voicing their outrage on social media after an American commentator said Venus Williams "put the gorilla effect” on during her second-round match on Wednesday.

Williams, who was playing against Stefanie Voegele, was stepping into the baseline ready for her opponent's second serve when the comment was made by ESPN's Doug Adler.

"She misses a first serve and Venus is all over her,” he said.

"You see Venus move in (and) put the gorilla effect on. Charging.”

Tennis fans were not happy, with many calling for Adler, a 59-year-old former pro, to be fired.

New York Times tennis writer Ben Rothenberg was vocal in his appraisal fo the situation.

"This is some appalling stuff,” Rothenberg tweeted. "Horrifying that the Williams sisters remained subjected to it still in 2017.”

This, of course, isn't the first time a commentator has made such comments about one of the Williams sisters.

In 2014 the president of the Russian Tennis Federation Shamil Tarpishchev referred to Serena and Venus Williams as the "Williams brothers”.

Adler and ESPN have yet to respond to the furore.
