TENNIS: Just when you thought it was safe to watch Nick Kyrgios, the superbrat returns.

Many, including current and former Davis Cup captains Lleyton Hewitt and Wally Masur, believed that the 21-year-old's win at last week's Japan Open was proof the Aussie had finally put his spoiled-brat antics behind him.

But sadly Kyrgios reverted to type in a bizarre display at the Shanghai Masters, a tournament at which if he had done well would have put him in line to make the season-ending World Tour finals in London.

He has always been petulant on court but the lack of respect he showed to his opponent Mischa Zverev in the 6-3 6-1 defeat in the second round in China was beyond compare, with even the umpire warning Kyrgios that he had to at least make out he was trying.

Kyrgios should have beaten the German at a canter yet he went out with barely a whimper, putting up weak serves, playing shots between his legs and walking off court before points were finished.

It's hardly the behaviour of a player with aspirations to make the world's top 10 and with all the talent to do it.

But what was most upsetting was the lack of respect Kyrgios showed for the fans both during the match and after at his press conference.

At one point during the encounter a disgruntled fan told him to "respect the game" and "respect the people". He replied: "You want to come here and play? Sit down and shut up and watch."

Kyrgios was then asked by reporters about his behaviour and he gave them short shrift, saying: "It's my choice. If you don't like it, I didn't ask you to come and watch. Just leave.

"If you're so good at giving advice and so good at tennis, why aren't you as good as me? Why aren't you on the tour?

"You want to buy a ticket? Come watch me. You know I'm unpredictable. It's your choice. I don't owe you anything."

Yes, Kyrgios you certainly are unpredictable and that is why people want to watch you.

But also you have an obligation to these fans who have paid big money to watch you play.

You are in a privileged position, something which a lot of people who watch you cannot even get anywhere close to.

Don't abuse that privilege.
