Family affair for Origin debutant Dane Gagai

Mackay product Dane Gagai will debut in next week's State of Origin decider and the local lad was in high demand at the Proserpine fan day.

But amid the hundreds of pictures and auto- graphs, the 24-year-old slipped off to the side to meet with his family.

"I messaged them (family) that I'd be up and they made the trip this morning. They weren't going to miss it and it's a good excuse to catch up with the family," Gagai said.

His younger sister Sophie doesn't miss any of the Newcastle Knights centre's games and had high hopes for his Origin debut.

Gagai's uncle Aaron Hoffman said his selection was just the start of his Origin career.

"I'm just really proud to see his hard work pay off," Hoffman said.

"I think he'll handle it all right, he's got good boys around him, they'll look after him and Queensland will get up."
