Extra lifeguards to patrol beaches

BEACHES in the Bundaberg region will come under extra surveillance as lifeguard coverage is expanded over the Christmas school holidays to include early morning jetski patrols.

Since the beginning of December a paid lifeguard service has been operating at six of the region's beaches - Elliott Heads, Nielson Park, Kelly's Beach, Mon Repos, Oaks Beach and Moore Park Beach.

Bundaberg Regional Council health and environmental services spokeswoman Mary Wilkinson said early morning jetski surveillance patrols would also operate from 6am to the start of regular patrols hours during December and January.

These would operate seven days a week, from Kelly's Beach, including Archie's Beach, to Mon Repos.

"Additional lifeguard services already operating include two lifeguards operating at Kelly's Beach from 8am to 6pm every day until January 13 and two lifeguards operating at

Nielson Park Beach from 8am to 6pm on weekdays from December 27-30," Cr Wilkinson said.

Social and recreation spokeswoman Lynne Forgan said a trial of a roving surveillance lifeguard patrol at Woodgate Beach from December 31-January 15 would also be implemented.
