EPL triumph would rival World Cup

SHOULD Manchester City win the Premier League, David Silva argued that it would stir the same emotions in himself and the club's supporters as Spain's victory in the World Cup final.

Spain's journey to football greatness might be a template for Silva's current club. Having broken a 44-year international drought with their triumph in the European Championship in 2008, Spain then carried off football's greatest trophy in style two years later. Last season's FA Cup broke Manchester City's 35-year wait for a trophy of any description and, now if they can hold off Manchester United for the next three months, capturing the championship will release a dam-burst of emotions.

"It will be as important for me to win the Premier League as it was to win the World Cup," Silva said. "To know that the supporters have waited so long for something like this, it will be a very important moment for everyone."

Silva's contribution to any potential triumph at the Etihad Stadium will be greater than it was to Spain in South Africa, where he featured in only the opening fixture, a 1-0 defeat by Switzerland. Here, he has been perhaps Roberto Mancini's key player.

"The World Cup came after Spain won the European Championship. When you start celebrating trophies, the past doesn't seem so bad. But for sure Manchester United will be challenging until the very last minute. If we can get to the game against them with the same points difference, then that could be the decisive moment."

Silva argued that getting there would be easier with Carlos Tevez on board. "I saw him this morning for the first time in training and I just wished him all the best," he said. "He was always an important player for us. He is a great footballer, one of the best you can have, but it will be up to the coaches to decide precisely when he is ready. In previous seasons Carlos has shown great determination and, because of this, it will be easier for him to get his form back."
